AI pedestrian cameras

AI pedestrian cameras

AI pedestrian cameras for vehicles use computer vision and machine learning to detect pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users in real-time. Integrated into a car's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), these cameras provide drivers with visual and audio alerts to help prevent collisions. Some systems can even initiate automatic emergency braking.

How AI pedestrian cameras work

AI camera systems rely on an embedded computer with deep-learning algorithms to identify and track objects.

  • Continuous monitoring: High-definition cameras continuously record the area around the vehicle.
  • Pedestrian detection: The AI uses computer vision algorithms to recognize and distinguish human shapes from other objects, including in various postures like crouching or lying down. Some advanced systems can also differentiate between pedestrians and animals.
  • Collision prediction: The system's AI analyzes the detected pedestrian's movement relative to the vehicle's speed and path. It categorizes the risk based on distance and movement patterns, often using a tiered warning system (e.g., green, amber, and red zones).
  • Visual cues: A pedestrian is highlighted on an in-cab display or monitor. Audible alarms: A buzzer or alert sound is triggered inside the vehicle.
  •  External warnings: In industrial vehicles, external alarms or lights may also activate to warn pedestrians and other workers.
